We're talking with the designers themselves about their line. Get to know the creator behind the collection and find inspiration in their personal stories of creativity.
How did you get into fashion design?
I was introduced to fashion as a little girl. My family was/is heavily involved in the fashion scene in Philadelphia. My great Aunt Mary produced fashion shows & pageants in the 1970’s & 80’s, and was an amazing seamstress, and my uncle Aaron Pender currently produces wonderful fashion shows/ events with his company, Premiere Productions. I grew up surrounded by very talented designers, and was mentored by them. One in particular, Sayida Hafiz, taught me an immense amount about design technique, which has helped me tremendously in my growth and development with NIC*FISH.

What inspires your designs?
I’m inspired by any & everything – I find great beauty in people, places & things. I love all things vintage, and I’m deeply enamored with classic film and the visual and performing arts. Many NIC*FISH silhouettes are inspired by the femininity, gracefulness and seamless movement of professional dancers. I try to bring all of those things into the line when designing. With NIC*FISH, comfort is key, without sacrificing high style and individuality.
How long did you have to construct your final collection and how did you feel about it?
This collection didn’t take very long to complete because I’d had the idea to do a collection of convertibles in varying silhouettes for a few years. After introducing The Original Convertible Jumpsuit Trouser in my 2008 collection, and seeing how successful that was, I thought it was wise to continue the convertible jumpsuit’s development into more fun silhouettes.
If you could do anything else, what would it be?
I would continue to mentor and teach young people, exposing them to the arts & culture, and opportunities for professional & personal achievement. And if I could, I would travel, 24/7! There’s so much of world culture that I am hungry to explore.
What advice do you have for young women who want to be a fashion designer?
Believe in, and nurture your dreams & goals. Find professional mentors to guide you on achieving your professional goals. Pursue a formal education in design. Have clear vision, become tenacious, and surround yourself with only like-minded, supportive, positive people, personally & professionally. Always remain humble about your skills – there’s always more to learn with each passing day. And be fearless, always allowing your beautiful light to shine.
Ideally, I’d love to grow NIC*FISH into a household name, internationally, and secure a fabulous boutique/showroom/studio space for NIC*FISH, and for my other creative endeavors. I will continue to style, shop & consult artists & fashionistas. I will also continue to embrace new film projects as they arise for costume design, a life-long passion of mine.

Plus, NIC*FISH now offers plus sizes, 1X thru 3X, on all convertible jumpsuits!
